Chelsea have unveiled their Enzo Maresca replacement – Liam Rosenior makes the move to London from sister club Strasbourg.

Rosenior is a new name to many supporters so this article will introduce you to the newest Premier League gaffer.

Rosenior is an ex-professional footballer who played for Bristol City, Fulham, Torquay United, Reading, Ipswich Town, Hull City and Brighton in the 2000s and 2010s before becoming Derby County interim manager in 2022.

The Briton also played a total of 11 games for the England under-21s and under-20s but never graduated to the senior team.

Rosenior has had an impressive start to his coaching career, originally as the assistant coach for Brighton’s under-23 team.

Rosenior later became assistant manager at Derby County, working under Wayne Rooney.

When Rooney left Derby in 2022, The Englishman stepped up and served as interim manager for the start of the 2022-23 season, winning an impressive seven games from his 12 in charge before being replaced by Paul Warne in September 2022.

The then 38-year-old grabbed the attention of Hull City, for whom he signed in November of 2022. A deal which saw him return to the club he made 161 appearances for between 2010 and 2015.

In his first full season for the club, Rosenior steered the club to a 7th place finish, narrowly missing out on the play-offs. After this impressive season, Hull City made the shock decision to sack Rosenior with owner Acun Ilicali explaining the decision as a difference in football philosophy.

Ligue 1 club Strasbourg snapped up the managerial prospect ahead of the 2024-25 season, replacing Patrick Vieira with whom the club finished 13th the previous season.

In his first match for the club, the Briton fielded a team comprised solely of players aged under-23. That game ended in a 1-1 draw with Montpellier and showed the world that Rosenior was a manager that gave young players a chance and cared deeply about academy football.

In his first season in charge of the French club, Rosenior took Strasbourg from 13th to 7th and achieved qualification to the Conference League.

This season, the 41-year-old continued where he left off with Strasbourg currently sitting in 7th place at the mid-way point of the season.

Far more impressive, however, is that Strasbourg currently sit top of the Conference League.

Chelsea have signed an up-and-coming manager with lots of experience managing young teams to continue their project into the future.

However, Rosenior does lack the experience that the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino have in abundance.

Strasbourg and former Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell has said that Rosenior is going “straight to the top” and that “he is the reason I joined the club.”

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones stated: “I was really impressed with the way he spoke with the players, the meetings, the way he sees the game. He is passionate and is not afraid to make big decisions.”

This is what Chelsea fans have been crying out for for years now, but will it work out for Liam Rosenior?
